    Dr. Shelia Smoot, J.D. In public service Shelia Smoot served eight years as a Jefferson County Commissioner. In public service she has worn many hats. She was elected as the first African American and youngest person to sit on the states largest County Commission. She also served as The National Association of Black County Officials President. She has also introduced two American Presidents during their stops in Alabama, President Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama. She was also a special guest of U.S. Senator Richard Shelby and President George W. Bush for National Black Music Month.

    In Journalism, Shelia has served as the first news director for 987 Kiss FM. She currently is the News Director for Summit Media Corporation and anchors daily newscasts for 987 KISS-FM, WAGG AM-610 and The New FM-100 and The Shelia Smoot Show on WAGG AM-610. Shelia also was a main anchor for WBRC Fox6 Good Day Alabama and Fox6 News at Noon. She was also known for her hard-hitting award winning Six On Your Side reports and her hard nosed political reporting at NBC13 as it’s Bureau Chief. Shelia has also hosted Alabama Business with Shelia Smoot on ABC 33/40 and The Shelia Smoot Show on CBS-42. She has also hosted Know Your Rights with Shelia Smoot syndicated in 16 Alabama radio markets. As a well known Consumer Advocate her trusted brand and motto is “Don’t Be A Sucker…Be A Consumer.”

    In Education, Shelia has taught journalism and coached dance both at Beecher High School, Anniston High School, Miles College, Talladega College, and Michigan State University. She has also taught for The Auburn Center for Governmental Services and is published through Auburn for her remarks at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. in their book entitled Advancing Excellence and Public Trust in Government.

    Shelia has given her public service to many boards and served in leadership in the past on the Metropolitan Arts Council, Regional Planning Commission, Girls Inc., National Association of Black Journalist, The Michigan and Alabama Associated Press as Secretary, The National Association of Black County Officials as President, The Alabama Association of County Officials, The Black Law Student Association as President, and currently sit’s on The Michigan State University Black Alumni Association National Board of Directors.

    Shelia is a graduate of Michigan State University and The Birmingham School of Law. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity, and The Michigan State University Alumni Dance Team. She attends More Than Conquerors Faith Church where she is an Elder. Shelia is married with one daughter.
