Michael Jerome Barber, the teen being charged in the Courtlin Arrington shooting, has been charged with manslaughter.

After deliberation, the jury found Barber guilty of a misdemeanor of Criminally Negligent Homicide. Barber could face up to a year in jail. His sentencing is set for August 8, 2019.

A school officer testified that he stood near the gun Barber used that killed Arrington in 2018. The officer says he made sure no one touched that particular gun until investigators got there. The jury also saw surveillance video from inside the school.

On the stand, the medical examiner explained the path of the bullet, which entered Arrington’s right side of her chest, hit her right lung, anterior ventricle artery, spinal column, and ultimately exited through the left side of her back. The medical examiner described the bullet’s path as slightly downward, and could not confirm exactly how far away the bullet was shot from.

Arrington was planning to become a nurse and was a bright student at Birmingham City School’s Huffman High.
